those streets

land stolen from the Lenape
built with the blood of those enslaved
my pocket full of dreams has drowned
washed ashore brave
this concrete jungle doesn't make dreams anymore
this concrete imploded decades ago

those big lights inspired you
breakthrough
battery floods destroy like fires do
so many places in the world can now compare
remembering
firework fills the air

those streets who made me feel brand new
flooded 100x more often
I made it here
I suffered here
I drowned down here

life was once defined
no more state of mind

Notes

The tribute of Alicia Keys to New York city inspired to write this poem of a city like many: flooded, heated, unhabitable if we don’t act on the climate crisis.
