the climate envoy

they call you ‘presidential’
while your name was not on the ballot
the office as important

from the war in that delta
to coffee near the Fresh Pond
I feel a connection

but you, Mr. Envoy
represent a government that keeps supporting fossil fuel
how can your words be not empty if there are no deeds?

this is your legacy, your last call to immortality
succeeding to keep it in the ground
and restricting that fossil-fuel addicted country of yours

what ice sheet and glaciers will be doomed to disappear?
what level of carbon dioxide will otherwise be stuck in our atmosphere?
what temperature rise will be irreversible then?

Mr. Envoy, if not you now, who else when?

Notes

This poem calls all climate envoys to build a lasting legacy and act now for a swift transition to a just and green world.
