birthday in Paris

we celebrate today
cake and lemonade
five years ago, you shed your light
a new day would arrive
our grandchildren a future

awe and wonder evaporated slowly
the disillusionment

unaware that everybody left (their commitments)
you're partying hard
on an empty dance floor

Notes

This poem was written 5 years after the Paris Agreements were signed and explores the sentiment felt when comparing the climate action taken by governments to their commitments.
